God’s Rosebud

Dear One,

Today I wanted to post a poem by an unknown author called, God’s Rosebud.  My dad sent the poem to me since he knows how I like to garden.  It is a wonderful reminder to let God move in HIS time.  Don’t try to force His hand or do things by yourself.  If you do, you may end up ripping the petals off the work He has prepared for you to do.  Wait on the Lord and allow Him to lead and guide you each day.

A new minister was walking with an older, more seasoned minister in the garden one day.

Feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to do, he was asking the older preacher for some advice.

The older preacher walked up to a rosebush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to  open it without tearing off any of the petals.

The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older preacher and was trying to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his wanting to know the will of God for his life and ministry.

But, because of his great respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to try to unfold the rose, while keeping every petal intact. It wasn’t long before he realized how impossible this was to do.

Noticing the younger preacher’s inability to unfold the rosebud, without tearing it, the older preacher  began to recite the following poem…

It is only a tiny rosebud,
a flower of God’s design;
But I cannot unfold the petals

with these clumsy hands of mine.

The secret of unfolding flowers

Is not known to such as I.

GOD opens this flower so easily,

but in my hands they die.

If I cannot unfold a rosebud,

this flower of God’s design,

Then how can I have the wisdom

to unfold this life of mine?

So, I’ll trust in God for leading

each moment of my day.
I will look to God for guidance

in each step along the way.

The path that lies before me,
only my Lord and Savior knows.
I’ll trust God to unfold the moments,

just as He unfolds the rose.

“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”  Psalm 16:11 (NKJV)

  1. Beautiful poem and very wise!!! I needed to hear this. Sometimes I wonder about a special someone I care for, but that things sometimes seem distant and confusing. I come to realize I must keep praying and trust God that He is working even though I do not see what I want to see happen. It is happening slowly and maybe is better that way.

    • Cheryl Zelenka says:

      Ms Sandra,
I can see how the rose petal story can tie into the unfolding of a relationship. Let God lead you and help you build a solid foundation on which to build your friendship.

  2. Perfect story today. As I wait for my post-surgery knee to get stronger and let me get back to normal, I needed this reminder that it will not happen in my time, after all. Patience…..

    • Cheryl Zelenka says:

First of all Ms Genevieve…. Praise God you had surgery and will be walking better soon.
Second of all…. I find it interesting that when we feel weak, patience is hard. But the Word tells us, “Those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength.” Blessings dear friend.
