Looking Up Helps With Our Metamorphosis

“Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.”                          Proverbs 12:25 (NKJV)

“He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord
shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”             Isaiah 40:29-31 (NKJV)

Because of an undiagnosed and slow growing brain tumor, I suffered from clinical depression for over ten years.  If you have endured the pit of depression; you know how very painful it can be.  The hopelessness, lethargy, and feelings of helplessness are overwhelming. Depression, like cancer, kills many.

I would often say my depression was cut out of my soul when they cut the tumor out of my brain.  Actually, this is a true fact as the growth was on my frontal lobe, an area that affects emotions and behaviors. Oh, if only every depressed person could undergo surgery and have their depression extricated. Better yet, why not a simple vaccination that would dissolve the menace of peace and tranquility? That would truly be wondrous!

Everyone experiences some measure of sadness, even our Lord!  He wept when He discovered that Lazarus, his friend had died.  He was also so filled with anxiety in the Garden of Gethsemane, that blood became His sweat. Extreme anxiety and stress causes depression…. Even for mature and faithful Christians.

Think about the twelve apostles, the Virgin Mary, Martin Luther, and even Mother Teresa.  Surely they all experienced periods of depression and anxiety.  Having family and friends nearby, and the entire Body of Christ, to lift you up at such times is so important.  We are to called to carry each other’s burdens. It is a privilege.

If your sorrow is over the death of a loved one, time will ease the suffering.  However, the hole in your heart will remain until you are reunited with your beloved now in the heavens. Learning to carry on without this special person by your side takes courage. Be assured that the Lord and your love are cheering you on with the rest of the heavenly hosts.  You have more things to accomplish for God. You must carry on and finish all of the good works He has prepared for you to accomplish.

When it is a dilemma that causes our overwhelming anxiety, choosing to focus on God more than our problem will relieve depression. After all, Our Creator is in control of the universe.  He is all-powerful and all knowing. He has planned our course and the issues we struggle with do not surprise Him. He has provided the Holy Spirit as our Counselor.  We merely need to ask for His help and advise. Then, once we have heard His instructions, it is our responsibility to act.

Prolonged and chronic pain will also cause depression.  If you are one of those highly honored by God, who must constantly endure the agony of pain, it is hard to keep joy and peace in your life. I say hard, but I know it is possible to maintain a spirit of rejoicing.  I have seen it in a friend who must endure terrible pain daily. There are times when she may waver and fall prey to discouragement, but she always finds the strength to look up and trust in God.  Like her, you can do all things through Him who gives you strength.

My heart goes out to those who must endure this very challenging trial.  God must have a very special purpose and plan for your life.  He has honored you with the opportunity to share in His sufferings.  You, more than I, can identify with the cross and extreme sacrifice Jesus made for us. You have a deeper understanding of the need for a total dependence on God, and a greater opportunity to rely on His absolute provision.  Blessed are you!

I do not make light of anybody’s pain, be it physical or emotional.  I have known both types of agony. They have served to refine me and transform me into the diamond I long to become. When you are able to recognize your depressed condition, and desire more hope for your future, with the grace of God you will move forward.  Keeping your eyes transfixed on God will help you forget your whys and how comes.  Ultimately, they really don’t matter, do they?

If you trust God with your whole heart, and believe He has a reason for permitting each trial in your life, you understand that your hardship has been for your welfare and not for misery’s sake. God is not cruel.  God loves us so much that He designs a personal metamorphosis for each of His children.                                                                                +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
