“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)
“A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV)
When we set out on a journey or road trip, we need a good map or a reliable GPS to get us to our destination. Before departing, some drivers may feel some anxiety. They worry about the unknown detours or the dangerous intersections that lie ahead and should be avoided.
However, if we submit our wills to God and lay down all issues of control, we can relax on our spiritual journey. Who better to drive the car and get us to our destination? Our Father knows all the roads that are under construction and the best routes to take. They may not be the quickest or easiest roads to travel, but He will be sure to drive us down the ones best suited for us.
Maybe releasing control is not easy for you. Perhaps you prefer driving instead of sitting in the passenger seat. Being a driver allows you the ability to decide which direction and speed to take. If you see a location that appeals to you, stopping is within your power.
Letting someone else get behind the wheel requires trust… trust that the road they lead you down will be for your benefit, safety, and profit. Nobody willingly jumps into a passenger seat hoping to experience an accident. A passenger must have faith in the driver in order to enjoy the journey. You must be able to trust God if you are going to enjoy your spiritual journey. He wants you to relax and give Him the control.
It takes skill, knowledge, and wisdom to reach a destination safely. God has all of this and more. He knows where to stop for gas and where to spend the night. He also knows the restaurants with the best food where folks are serving just what you need.
Reminding yourself of His faithfulness in the past will ease any anxiety you might experience regarding where He takes you. There may be short excursions off the main road because He has planned for you to bless another with your gifts. He knows how long to stay and when to get back on the highway.
Are you ready to let God drive you to the next destination on your spiritual journey? Can you enjoy the view as you relax in the passenger seat? Will you release your own well mapped out plans and toss them out the window? If so, I guarantee you will enjoy the ride of your life.
“’For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.’” Jeremiah 29:11 (NASB)
